Thick White Discharge- It’s Types And What Do They Mean?

Vaginal discharge is quite common as it acts as an important housekeeping function in the female reproductive system. If it is a white discharge and if it is odorless, then it is pretty normal, and there is nothing to panic about, but if it is something other than; something of a different color, then it probably is a sign of some disease or infection that should be immediately treated. There are various problems that female faces that include irregular periods, vaginal discharge, etc. These are various things in which you might require proper knowledge and guidance instead of a doctor’s advice. Let us discuss the thick white discharge that women may face and how to overcome it.

Types of discharge

The white discharge also has different types, so it is important to understand them and know what they mean. Three types of white discharges can occur in the form of vaginal discharge in women.

  • Thick white discharge– The first and the most common type of white discharge mentioned before is the thick white discharge. Getting this kind of discharge before periods is perfectly normal; this can also happen towards the end of the menstrual cycle. Most of the women also experience such kind of discharge during the starting stages of their pregnancy. This, in a way, keeps the cervix healthy, moist, and sealed. So if you are getting a thick white discharge, then there is nothing to worry about.
  • Creamy white milky discharge– If a woman is ovulating, this type of discharge is quite common. During ovulation, the progesterone levels are quite high, which leads to a heavy creamy discharge. Such a discharge is also considered an early sign of pregnancy and can be completely odorless or can have mil odor.
  • Thick white clumpy discharge– If your discharge is clumpy and of a cottage cheese texture, it is a sign of an infection.

Causes of white discharge

There are a few common conditions that are associated with white discharge like:

  • Yeast infection– Yeast infection occurs when there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the vaginal area. Yeast is commonly found in the vagina, but when it gets out of control, then it leads to infection. Mostly all women face yeast infection at some point in their life; so there is nothing to panic about it. Thick cottage cheese type of discharge is common in yeast infection and can lead to itching and burning. Except for an overgrowth of bacteria, there are other common causes for yeast infection like diabetes, stress, pregnancy, and birth control pills. For yeast infection, doctors usually give a prescribed medication for its treatment.
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) – Thick discharge can also be caused due to sexually transmitted diseases. This is spread through sexual contact, and it can also be transferred through the sharing of bathing suits or towels. Inflammation, pain, and itching are the common symptoms of Sexually transmitted disease. STD’s are usually cured by a proper course of antibiotics.
  • Atrophic vaginitis– This occurs after menopause and is caused by the thinning of the vaginal walls. Most women go through menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, so if vaginal atrophy occurs, it can increase the chance of developing chronic vaginal infections and UTI. Thick white discharge is a common symptom of this. Except for this, other symptoms are vaginal dryness, burning, spotting after sex, pain during sexual intercourse, shortening of the vaginal canal, and frequent urinary tract infections.
  • Vulvovaginitis- This can secrete more discharge, which can be thick and of a foul smell. This is usually caused by bacteria and yeast, although parasites such as lice and pinworms are common. The most common symptoms of Vulvovaginitis are general itching, irritation in the genital area, foul odor, inflammation, increase in discharge levels, and painful urination.  For this, one needs to get a proper test done through the doctor to suggest the treatment.
  • Bacterial vaginosis is another reason for thick discharge; this condition is common in women, and over a million women develop bacterial vaginosis every year. This condition is easily treatable, but it can cause sexually transmitted infections or complications during pregnancy if not treated properly. Bacterial vaginosis, which leads to a thick white discharge, is usually caused by overuse of antibiotics, unprotected sex, multiple sex partners, douching, and overuse of vaginal medications.

Home remedies for treatment

There are several home remedies that women can easily use in their daily life in case of vaginal discharge like:

  • Alum– Mixing alum powder with water and then applying it in the vaginal area is one remedy; one can also rub a piece of alum every time while taking a shower. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties. This, in a way, helps in getting rid of the unwanted germs from the vagina.
  • Cranberry – This sour fruit is an effective natural remedy used to treat white discharge, which is quite a common problem in women’s vaginal areas. It has antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties, which prevent any foreign substance from attacking the vaginal wall.
  • Cumin seeds- One can grind cumin seeds and mix them with homey to apply on the vaginal area. This is quite an effective natural remedy used to treat the problem of white discharge.
  • Sandalwood oil- Another powerful way of treating the problem of white discharge in the vagina. The aromatic smell of sandalwood helps in preventing the bacteria from breeding in the vaginal area.
  • Mango paste- Instead of eating the mango, one can also mash the mango and make a fine paste. One can apply this paste directly to the vaginal area as this helps in soothing the burning and itching sensation.

The problem of white discharge is common, and at times, it can get serious if not treated well. In case one doesn’t want to visit a doctor and have antibiotics for treatment. These home remedies available in one’s kitchen are indeed the best treatment for the white discharge problem that most women face in their lives.
