Description
LXR-α is an oxysterol-activated member of the LXR subfamily of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. It has been suggested to be the major sensor of dietary cholesterol. LXR-α is expressed at low to moderate levels in most physiological systems, including the central nervous system (CNS), endocrine system, gastrointestinal system, reproductive system, cardiopulmonary system, skeletal muscle and skin. Primary sites of expression are in the gall bladder, liver, kidney, jejunum, duodenum, brown adipose tissue and white adipose tissue. LXR-α variants are associated with cholelithiasis and modified plasma lipid profile. LXR-α deficiency results in impaired cholesterol and bile acid metabolism in mice.
