Description
Bile acids are important for the solubilization and transport of dietary lipids and are the major products of cholesterol catabolism. FXRα is a bile acid-activated member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. FXRα is expressed primarily in the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, colon, gall bladder, liver and kidney. Targeted disruption of FXRα results in elevated serum bile acids, cholesterol and triglycerides, increased hepatic cholesterol and triglycerides, a proatherogenic serum lipoprotein profile and reduced bile acid pools fecal bile acid excretion.
