Description
ROR-α is a member of the orphan ROR subfamily of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors which, along with ROR-β, appears to have a general role in cell survival in the central nervous system (CNS). ROR-α is expressed at low to moderate levels in most physiological systems, including the central nervous system (CNS), endocrine system, gastrointestinal system, reproductive system, cardiopulmonary system and metabolic tissues. Peaks of expression are seen in the cerebellum, corpus striatum, hypothalamus, preputial gland, testis and skeletal muscle. Targeted disruption (knockout) of ROR-α is associated with defects in growth, behavior, the nervous system, homeostasis and metabolism, and with cerebellar ataxia and post-natal lethality.
