Description
SF-1 is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors that is thought to play roles in regulating mammalian sexual development, as well as in controlling differentiation of steroidogenic tissues. SF-1 is expressed primarily in the adrenal gland, hypothalamus, ovary and testes. Abnormalities in SF-1 function have been implicated in adrenocortical insufficiency, sex reversal, cryptorchidism, insulin resistance and type II diabetes. Disruption (knockout) of SF-1 in mice causes loss of pituitary gonadotrope function and failure of adrenal gland and gonad development.
