Description
LXR-β is an oxysterol-activated member of the LXR subfamily of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. LXRβ is involved in regulation of cholesterol homeostasis in the liver. LXR-β is expressed at moderate to high levels in most physiological systems, including the central nervous system (CNS), endocrine system, gastrointestinal system, reproductive system, cardiopulmonary system, skeletal muscle and skin. Peaks of expression are in the cerebellum, corpus striatum, olfactory bulb and pituitary gland, the thyroid, kidney, testis and aorta. Targeted disruption (knockout) of the LXR-β gene is associated with defects in the cardiovascular system, homeostasis and metabolism and the nervous system.
