Description
RU-486 is an antagonist of the progesterone receptor (PR), a steroid receptor member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. It has overlapping specificity with other steroid receptors including androgen receptor (AR) and glucocorticoid receptor (GR). As an abortifacient, its inhibition of progesterone action induces bleeding during the luteal phase and in early pregnancy by releasing endogenous prostaglandins from the endometrium or decidua. As a GR antagonist, the drug has been used to treat hypercortisolism in patients with nonpituitary Cushing Syndrome.
