Description
Tamoxifen is a first generation triphenylethylene selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) used in the treatment and prevention of breast cancer. It is a mixed agonist/antagonist for the estrogen receptors (ERs), steroid receptor members of the nuclear receptor superfamily, and has estrogenic properties in tissues outside the breast, such as bone and uterus. Its major metabolite is 4-hydroxytamoxifen, which has a slightly higher in vitro affinity for ERα than the parent compound.
