Overview

ERR-α is a member of the ERR orphan subfamily of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. While it is structurally homologous to estrogen receptors and binds estrogen response elements, it is not activated by estrogens. It functions as a metabolic regulator by modulating the expression of enzymes involved in adipogenesis, energy metabolism, and lipid, eicosanoid, and steroid synthesis.

Expression

ERRα is expressed robustly in tissues in all major physiological systems (central nervous system (CNS), endocrine, metabolic, gastrointestinal, immune, reproductive, cardiovascular, respiratory and structural) with particularly high levels in the olfactory bulb, jejunum, ileum, kidney, brown adipose tissue, heart and skeletal muscle.

Diseases

ERRα dysfunction has been associated with bone density and type II diabetes.

Phenotypes

Targeted deletion (knockout) of ERRα results in defects in reduced fat mass.
