Overview

Estrogen receptor-β is a 17β-estradiol-activated steroid receptor member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. Roles for ER-β in the reproductive and cardiovascular systems have been reported, and ER-β has been postulated to act primarily as a modulator of ER-α function.

Expression

ERβ has a restricted expression pattern, with low levels in the central nervous sytem (CNS), colon, lung and reproductive system (epididymis, prostate), and comparatively high levels in the ovary.

Diseases

ER-β dysfunction is associated with cancer (breast cancer, colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer, prostate cancer, uterine cancer), cardiovascular defects (coronary atherosclerosis, elevated arterial blood pressure, elevated triacylglcerol lipoprotein levels, hypertension, deep vein thrombosis), metabolic defects (bone mineral density, osteporosis), neurological defects (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease), psychiatric conditions (anorexia nervosa, bulimia, major depressive disorder) and reproductive disorders (endometriosis, menstrual disorders and preeclampsia).

Phenotypes

Targeted deletion (knockout) of ERβ results in defects in the cardiovascular system, the hearing & vestibular system, homeostasis and metabolism, the musculoskeletal system, the central nervous system (CNS) and the renal/urinary system.
