Overview

COUP-TFI is a member of the COUP-TF orphan subfamily of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. It has varied roles in the development of the peripheral nervous system, such as early regionalization of the neocortex, differentiation of subplate neurons and guidance of thalamocortical axons.

Expression

COUP-TFI is expressed in tissues in all major physiological systems (central nervous system (CNS), endocrine, metabolic, gastrointestinal, immune, reproductive, cardiovascular, respiratory and structural) with particularly high levels in the cerebellum, corpus striatum, olfactory bulb, spinal cord, hypothalamus and vas deferens.

Phenotypes

Targeted deletion (knockout) of COUP-TFI results in defects in the formation of commissural projections in the forebrain due to impaired axonal growth, as well as defects in morphogenesis of the glossopharyngeal ganglion, axonal projection, and arborization
