Name
Diethylstilbestrol
56-53-1
Jmol
Description
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are chemicals present in the diet and environment which are thought to be capable of signaling through the endocrine system with potentially adverse health effects. Many are believed to function through members of the nuclear receptor (NR) superfamily of transcription factors. Diethylstilbestrol is a synthetic panantagonist for the estrogen related receptor (ERR) subfamily of the NR superfamily. It was originally prescribed to prevent miscarriage, premature birth and other pregnancy problems, but has since emerged as a suspected EDC associated with increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive anomalies.
