Description
Dihydrotestosterone is the primary physiological ligand for the androgen receptor (AR), a steroid receptor member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. The precursor, testosterone, itself a weaker AR agonist, is secreted by the Leydig cells of the testes and converted to dihydrotestosterone in the prostate by 5α-reductase. It plays important roles in normal prostate growth and in the development of prostate cancer.
