Description
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are chemicals present in the diet and environment which are thought to be capable of signaling through the endocrine system with potentially adverse health effects. Many are believed to function through members of the nuclear receptor (NR) superfamily of transcription factors. Genistein is an isoflavone EDC present at high levels in soy-based products which has been shown to exhibit agonist activity with the estrogen receptors (ERs), steroid receptor members of the NR superfamily, leading to the term “phytoestrogen”.
